How Phil Ivey Won $20 Million Playing Baccarat
OK great. So what system did Phil Ivey use to Win $20 million on Baccarat. In the 60 minutes interview, he freely admits to using a system called “edge sorting“. First of all, you need a sharp eye to try this out. Plus it will only work in a physical casino – forget online or even live dealer game – it simply is impossible.
Baccarat Edge sorting
In the live casino, baccarat games are often dealt with the same cards, over and over in a day. But when the card printing is done imprecisely, the outside patterns do not always overlap properly. If you have a good eye and a great memory, you can remember the cards you do want to keep track of. Then you can bet accordingly.
This is not easy to do! Phil stated that his advantage was only about 5 to 6% which was enough for him to win big. He also had the casino agree in advance that the same cards would be used throughout his play.
This is not a very reproducible or realistic set of circumstances for most gamblers! If the casino knew what was going on, they could also simply bring out new cards. Or in this case, sue to get their money back.
